Article Types Eligible for Open Access Publishing Under ACM OPEN
As we move closer to our “flip” date of fully open access publishing (1st January 2026), ACM has come to define ACM Open eligibility by article type rather than by publication. As such we are no longer creating lists showing ACM Open eligibility by title. The vast majority of ACM journal, magazine, and conference proceedings publications include some level of APC-eligible research (i.e., research that is eligible to be opened under an institution’s ACM Open agreement). More on APC-eligible ACM publications and a list of the exceptions can be found here. The definition that ACM uses for APC-eligible articles is any of the following article types published in any ACM Publication (i.e. journals, magazines, conference proceedings, etc.):
- Interview
- Note/ Editorial Note/ Technical Note
- Research Article
- Review Article
- Short Paper
- Survey Article
- Tutorial
Please note ACM publishes thousands of other types of content every year. These content types are heavily downloaded from the ACM Digital Library, but are not APC-eligible. They include:
- Abstract
- Announcement
- Article commentary
- Book review
- Column
- Correction
- Course material
- Demonstration
- Extended abstract
- Forum
- Introduction
- Invited talk
- Keynote
- Letter
- Newsletter
- Opinion
- Panel
- Poster
- Work in Progress (WIP)

ACM Case Studies
Written by leading domain experts for software engineers, ACM Case Studies provide an in-depth look at how software teams overcome specific challenges by implementing new technologies, adopting new practices, or a combination of both. Often through first-hand accounts, these pieces explore what the challenges were, the tools and techniques that were used to combat them, and the solution that was achieved.
